Mistress Groove’s Top 5 Swing Songs…March

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

record_player 2Discovering new music to add to your collection is a fun process and there are lots of ways of going about it. You might have read that last month I told you about the old swing CDs I discovered at my parent’s house? Well, checking out your current CD and MP3 collection is the best place to start. I can guarantee that you’ll come across some swing tunes that you never knew you had! Friends are a great source of tips and suggestions. I’ve got a mate in Germany who gives me good tips, as do several of my UK friends. Its fun sharing ideas with others, especially if they don’t dance on the same scene as you as they’ll have plenty of new tunes for you. My last tip for finding new music is Lastfm.com. Its simple: pick an artist you like, lets say “Ella Fitzgerald” and it’ll start by live-streaming one of her tunes and will then introduce you to a raft of related artists. Enjoy! March’s top 5 toe tapping toons …

1) “Smooth Sailin’ Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald: legend. “Smooth Sailin’” is a familiar song on the scene, and a good’un. Its gentle, smooth (well, you kind of get that from the title don’t you) and a fine example of Ella’s talent at scatting – there aren’t any real words in there, all boo be doos etc.. But hey, who needs words!

2) “Let the Good Times Roll” Kansas City Stompers

The Kansas City Stompers are a Danish band, who’ve apparently been on the scene for 50 years. Wow. They have spent a fair amount of time in the US getting into the New Orleans groove. And the result is sublime. Vocals are by a gal called Sanne Salomonsen.

3) “Goody Goody” Della Reese

Della’s powerful vocals beckon you to the floor, where with this song you can have fun with some fantastic breaks. Della started singing aged 6 in her local gospel choir in Detroit. Inspired by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday she turned to jazz and joined the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra in 1953. In the 1950s and 1960s Della appeared in many TV shows and was the first black woman to host her own talk show. She’s still singing today and is an ordained minister.

4) “Junco Partner” Louis Jordon

Every now and again you’ll hear a Latin tune sneak into a swing set. This is a good example of one. It has that Latin feel, but beneath you’ll find a rhythm that you can swing to. Louis started his musical career in the 1930s playing big band swing as a saxophonist for bands such as the Savoy Ballroom Orchestra led by Chick Webb. He later became on the leading practitioners of “jump blues”. Apparently he was married 5 times.

5) “I Love Being Here With You” Barbara Morrison

I had never heard of Barbara Morrison until a few weeks ago in Bristol, but my word, this woman has a pair of lungs… She started performing aged 10 on her local radio station in Detroit and has still touring today. She sings a range of genres from blues to jazz from gospel to pop and has performed with greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and Etta James.

Happy listening. And if you have any feedback, or want to share some tunes then leave a comment in the box.

The story of one girl and two boys….

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Hang on hang on! Despite the dodgy title…it’s not what you think. That said, there’s more flashes of satin pants in this than your average Anne Summers. Take a look at this great vintage clip we stumbled accross on YouTube. A bit of a Swinging threesome if you will. Albeit a classy version. Oh the moves….

London Swing Festival Update

London Swing Festival

VERY EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT – ONLY 10 DAYS REMAINING.

Yes that’s right everyone – on Feb 10 the price for a London Swing Festival Gold Pass will go up. If you intend to register for LSF and you want to take advantage of getting the Very Early Bird Discount now is the time to do it.

On Feb 10 the Very Early Bird Discount will end and the Early Bird Discount will come into effect.

MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS SOON

I am currently working on some extremely exciting developments for the festival. Soon I will be able to announce the London Swing Festival band and additional teaching teams. WATCH THIS SPACE…

LONDON JITTERBUG CHAMPIONSHIPS – COMPETITOR REGISTRATIONS OPEN FEB 10

This year at the London Swing Festival (LSF) we will be holding the very first London Jitterbug Championships. This will be an exciting night of amazing dancing to be enjoyed by both spectators and competitors.

There will be a separate registration system for those wishing to compete at the London Jitterbug Championships (LJC). This registration system will be opening on Feb 10.

What you will need to do…

I have registered for or am going to register for LSF and I would like to compete…

If you have registered for, or are intending to register for LSF you will need to register separately for LJC. Yes that’s right you will need to register twice – once for LSF and once for LJC.

The LJC registration process will allow you to choose what events you would like to compete in and name the person you are competing with if it is a partnered event. You will be able to name different people for different events. For example you might want to compete in the Strictly Lindy event with Micky Mouse and the Balboa, with Bart Simpson. The registration system will allow you to do this. (If you can get Micky and Bart to show up).

I have registered for or am going to register for LSF and I would like to be a spectator…

If you have registered for LSF and have bought a Gold – Full Weekend Pass or a Green – Social Pass that include entry into LJC as a spectator you do not need fill out the separate LJC competitor registration form. The LJC registration system will be for COMPEITORS ONLY.

FOLLOWER REGISTRATIONS

Followers – now is your last change to register without having to name a lead. I was really hoping not to have close follower registrations but already I am finding the lead/follow ratio very unbalanced. Starting on Feb 10 all follows will need to register with a lead.

Follows – encourage those leads you know to register.

Follows if you register after Feb 10 without a lead you will have to be placed on a wait list until we have a lead to match you with. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE LEAD HAS TO BE THE SAME LEVEL AS YOU. Follows – the more leads we can encourage the happier we will all be…HELP ME OUT HERE!

LONDON SWING FESTIVAL HOUSING PROGRAMME

Janet (LSF Housing Coordinator) and I (Pippa – LSF Event Manager) would like to send out a huge thank-you to the very kind people who have already signed up to host dancers from out of town for the festival. Some crazy dancers signed up to host before even signing up for the festival.

Hosting dancers from out of town is a fun and rewarding way to meet dancers from around the country and the world. I have been both the host and the hosted before I have loved the experience every time.

If you are able to house some dancers for the festival please let us know by emailing info@londonswingfestival.co.uk

Balboa for beginners…

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Busy on Wednedsday night? Well cancel it. If you haven’t already signed up then now is the time to get your name down for the Balboa crash course (very low emphasis on crashing btw) at the Littern Tree on Wednesday night.  Scott and Lynelle will be walking you through the basics and getting you warmed up for our workshops with Joel Plys in Febrary and Dan Guest in March.
The first type of swing dancing I ever saw was Balboa and I fell in love with it immediately. I challenge you to not do the same :)

Don’t forget to register!
