Those of you unfortunate enough to miss the first London Swing Festival missed a whole load of great competitors in a whole load of amazing rounds. But by far the funniest, had to be the inaugural London Swing Festival Heel Slide competition! Yes, we’re serious. Check out the final heats…apparently, if you’re not falling over, you’re not trying hard enough :)

Something for those long taxi rides….

Monday, May 24th, 2010

With the London Jitterbug Championships but weeks away there’s never been a better time to brush up on your solo Charleston. The Newington Green kids had a go a few weeks a go, with some pretty impressive results it has to be said. So here we have a bit of a Charleston for dummies…be sure to stay to the end of the clip for something to do on those long taxi rides…

Al Minns…busting out the jam at the Savoy

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

If I was a guy, I’d be Al Minns. As I am a girl, I’d just like to know where he gets his shoes from. If you watch this extract from The Spirit Moves you’d be hard pushed not to be amazed by his Solo Charleston. Yes, I know…we’ve gone a bit solo Charleston crazy of late, but this guy is the true legend.  His knees are heading for both exits while his feet glide around effortlessly . All topped off with that HUGE grin…just to remind us what dancing is really all about. Enjoy….see you in the solo charleston round at the London Swing Festival ;)

Cutting a rug in Twice Blessed…

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Every seen a lindy punch up? Or maybe a lead almost strangle his follow to death? It’s murder on the dance floor in this clip from 1945 move Twice Blessed. Some square cats try their best in a swing dance contest. Let’s hope there’ll be no such horror at the London Swing Festival eh? :)

Ever seen underwater lindy? Thought not.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

If you thought the Shim Sham was hard…try it underwater.  OK, dont, but witness the mildly eccentric London Swing Festival instructor Dax Hock and Doug Silton doing it in Thailand. This is exactly 2 minutes and 36 seconds of madness but it’s really quite funny. Doug, we are just loving your underwater swivels, no really we are.

Balboa-Swing in the Maharaja…

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I heard someone say that Balboa was ‘boring’ the other day, so i thought it might be a good time to bust out a bit of  Hal & Betty Takier. This clip from the 1943 film Maharaja combine some lollies, aerials and some rather over the top pecking. Bal = boring….pffft!

This is also a perfect opportunity to welcome Claudia. Claudia runs Swing Patrol Australia and is a Balboa specialist!  She’ll be here in London in the run up to the London Swing Festival.  With Gary & Lynelle stranded in Oz so Scott & Claudia will be opening the Baby Balboa class this week at the Driver in Kings Cross.   We hope you will come down to try your hand at some Bal and give her a warm London style welcome.

Musicality-ty-ty-ty…

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

So, here’s a great clip I stumbled across on Swungover and I am not exaggerating when I say that I can’t stop watching it.  It’s  a routine by Todd Yannacone and Naomi Uyama at Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown in 2005 and there’s some seriously happy feet in here. Watching things like this just gets me all excited for the London Swing Festival in May. It will be my first big swing event and I can’t wait to see what competitors will be pulling out of the bag at the London Jitterbug Championships. If it’s even a tenth as fun ss this clip then it’ll be amazing. Swungover blogger Robert has some great thoughts on this video, I suggest you check out the original post here.
